Vicariate Assembly in Lissone: A Time of Reflection and Renewal
On Wednesday, May 7, the Betharramite religious of Italy gathered in Lissone for the Vicariate Assembly, continuing the path of reflection that began last year under the guidance of Fr. Davide Caldirola, parish priest of Madonna di Fatima in Milan. His keynote address drew inspiration from the Parable of the Talents (Mt 25:14–30), offering fresh insights for today’s context.
Fr. Davide opened his presentation by emphasising the value of storytelling—a narrative style that keeps parables vibrant and relevant, capable of resonating on multiple levels and open to diverse interpretations. This richness, he noted, enhances their spiritual and communicative power.
Focusing on the third servant in the parable—a central yet often overlooked figure—Fr. Davide highlighted how fear led him to inaction. Rather than taking a risk, the servant chose to bury his talent, returning it unused. This same fear, Fr. Davide pointed out, can still hinder or even paralyse our pastoral efforts today. Often, we become absorbed by the challenges and limitations around us, overlooking the goodness present in our communities, parishes, and within ourselves.
In this light, he urged those present to "dig"—not to hide the talent, but rather, recalling another Gospel parable, to unearth the hidden treasure that lies within us and in those around us.
Fr. Davide further reflected on how the third servant's behaviour is shaped by his perception of the master—as a harsh and demanding figure who reaps where he has not sown. In contrast, the first two servants, driven by a positive view of the master, act promptly, put their talents to work, and present the results with confidence.
To foster deeper engagement, Fr. Davide proposed a set of questions designed to spark both personal and communal reflection. He invited all participants to take concrete initiatives and to grow in awareness of the great responsibility embedded in our ministry.
The second part of the Assembly saw a lively and fruitful discussion among the religious, who, starting from Fr. Davide’s reflections, delved deeper into the relevance of the Parable of the Talents in our present-day reality. Fr David’s contribution was widely appreciated: with a simple and familiar tone, he was able to communicate profound and thought-provoking insights, offering valuable points for prayer and personal growth.
In the afternoon session, Fr. Simone, Regional Superior, presented an updated overview of the San Michele Region. He paid particular attention to the current challenges facing the France-Spain Vicariate.
