Football Tournament and Faith – A Joyful Celebration at Olton Friary
At first glance, football and faith might seem like an unlikely pairing—but here at Olton Friary Parish, we discovered just how beautifully they can come together. As part of our Jubilee Year celebrations, we organized two special football tournaments: one for the youth on 7th June and another inter-church tournament for adults on 6th July. Both events were held right here on the Friary Lawn, and they turned out to be a great success!
Youth Football Tournament – 7th June
We began the day with Holy Mass, with around 10 youth teams gathering from various parishes across the diocese of Birmingham . The young participants actively took part in the liturgy, setting a tone of reverence and joy. After Mass, the matches kicked off at 11:00 AM and continued until 6:00 PM. The day was filled with energy, laughter, and a real spirit of sportsmanship. It was inspiring to see the youth engaging so enthusiastically—not just in football, but in their journey of faith and fellowship.
Adult Inter-Church Tournament – 6th July
The adults had their turn a month later, with four teams coming together from neighbouring parishes. This event showed us how powerful sports can be in building unity. It was a day filled with friendly competition, community spirit, and meaningful conversations. The tournament became a platform for people from different parishes to connect, share their experiences, and strengthen bonds of faith.
These events reminded us how valuable activities like this can be—not just for fun and fitness, but for growing in faith, unity, and integrity. We are truly grateful to all who participated and supported these events. Your presence and enthusiasm made a real difference.
