Central African Republic - Niem
On Sunday, April 22nd , the Silver Jubilee of the presence of the two Congregations (Betharram and Franciscan Sisters) will be celebrated.
On the agenda there are quite a few events involving all the families and the associations of the Parish. The resource person will be Fr Agostino Bassani, Capuchin, for many years a missionary in this country. The climax of the celebrations will be the Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Mons Armando Gianni, Bishop of Bouar.
25 years ago, on December 23, Fr Arialdo Urbani and Fr Antonio Canavesi, arrived at Niem, a village in the north-west of the Central African Republic and they found accommodation in the sacristy of the small chapel: that was the beginning of our mission in this country at the heart of Africa.
In these 25 years much has been done and the community has been growing. Fr Tiziano Pozzi came along and opened a dispensary with the help of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Gemona (Italy)
Over the years the missionaries have been getting more and more involved in the demanding setup of this country (first at Niem and then in Bouar). They experienced the real problems of the people and they became more aware of their problems.
Schools and chapels were built in several nearby villages, the dispensary was built, which quite soon assured a high-level performance, given the circumstances. Located in the brousse, it is the drive behind the basic health care of an entire province.
