Betharram - Communication
Today, on June 2nd, we remembered the 200th anniversary of the first Communion of St. Michael Garicoits in the church of Garris .
In 1809, Michael's father gained him a position as a servant on a farm to earn some money. When he went out with the flock, Michael always took a booklet along with him to teach himself, and in this way learned grammar and the catechism. Two years later, he was very worried - he had not yet made his First Communion. A few months later, he obtained permission to receive Jesus. Thirst for the Eucharist would stay with him always. Having become a priest, he wrote [paraphrase of Psalm 41]: Ours is a strong God - without Him, my soul thirsts for the Lord... Ours is a living God - without Him, I would die....(source)
In conjunction with this anniversary, Editions du Signe just released a beautifully illustrated booklet about our founder for children. Published in French in the series "Enlightened Lives", it will be soon available in Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese and Thai. This is a good initiative to make St. Michael life known to children, and bring them closer to the Love of his life: Jesus in the Eucharist.
