Algeria - Algiers
The Bishops Conference of the Northern Region of Africa (CERNA) chaired by Mons Vincent Landel,SCJ met in Algiers from January 29th to February 2nd .
In the final communiqué, the bishops of Tunisia, Morocco, Libya and Algeria "recognize in the events that are now unsettling Tunisia, Egypt ... a demand for freedom and dignity, especially from the younger generations " But this freedom, wrote the Betharramite Archbishop of Rabat on behalf of his colleagues, involves respect for each other. Freedom of conscience and citizenship will no doubt be increasingly at the heart of relations between believers, Christians and Muslims, in Maghreb.
Members of the CERNA also visited the Abbey of Our Lady of Tibhirine, where lived the 7 French Trappists murdered in 1996. "Of Men and Gods", the film which was shot last year, helped all to better grasp the meaning of the churchs presence in Northern Africa, concluded Bishop Landel.
