400 years of the Calvary
1616: In July the Archbishop of Auch came to Betharram as a pilgrim. On the hilltop he erected a large cross.
In September 1616, some farmers of Montaut saw the cross struck down by a storm. Immediately it was seen to re-erect itself surrounded by a shining light.
The miracle was confirmed by a canonical enquiry carried out by the Church.
Following this event, a Way of the Cross was built along the hill.
On 11 September, Betharram will celebrate this 400 years anniversary at the presence of Mons Marc Aillet, Bishop of Bayonne, Lescar e Oloron.
